PTFE Flange Bushings for Different Mounting Requirements

A standard PTFE composite bushing supports a moving shaft within a housing. A PTFE flange bushing uses the same sliding layer and steel backing, with an integrated flange at one end.

The flange can help position the bushing during assembly and provide an axial stop when the housing design allows it, so the assembly does not need a separate locating component. The difference between the two designs comes down to mounting geometry: besides the bore, outside diameter and bushing length, the flange diameter and thickness have to fit the surrounding components.

For replacement projects, check the complete mounting arrangement before switching from a straight bushing to a flanged design.

Check the Flange Dimensions Before Ordering

When selecting PTFE flange bushings, matching the bore diameter alone is not enough. The bushing body and the flange both have to fit the existing assembly.

Check these dimensions before confirming your order.

DimensionWhat to Check
Bore diameter (d1)Shaft diameter and required running clearance
Outside diameter (d2)Housing bore and specified fit
Bushing length (b)Available mounting depth
Flange outside diameter (d3)Clearance from adjacent components and the flange seating area
Flange thickness (b1)Available axial space and the required installed position

A flange that is too large may interfere with nearby parts, and one that is too thick may change the axial position of the assembly. For replacement bushings, compare the dimensions against the original drawing or sample, and confirm the shaft condition, operating load, sliding speed and temperature before approving the replacement.

Standard Sizes for PTFE Flange Bushings

Standard sizes cover common shaft diameters from 6 mm to 40 mm. Dimensions are in millimetres; d1 is the bore, d2 the outside diameter, d3 the flange outside diameter, b the bushing length and b1 the flange thickness.

Steel-Backed PTFE Composite Structure

PTFE flange bushings use the same steel-backed composite structure as the corresponding straight PTFE bushings. The integrated flange changes the mounting geometry, not the sliding layer design.

The PTFE-based sliding layer is made for low friction sliding and for dry running, where external lubrication may be reduced or unnecessary, depending on the operating conditions and material specification. The composite is self lubricating in that sense, and the steel backing supports the structure and helps the bushing fit into its housing. Actual performance depends on the material grade, shaft surface, load, sliding speed and operating temperature.

When selecting a replacement, confirm that the material specification and operating limits meet the requirements of your application. A flange on its own does not raise the load capacity or the temperature rating of the bushing.

When Do You Need a Flanged Bushing?

A flanged bushing is useful when the assembly needs both radial shaft support and a defined axial locating surface.

The bushing needs an axial stop

The flange can locate the bushing against a suitable housing surface and help control its installed position.

Space for separate locating parts is tight

An integrated flange may simplify the arrangement when the surrounding design permits it.

The original component has a flanged profile

Matching the existing flange geometry can help maintain the intended mounting position during replacement.

A straight bushing may be sufficient when the housing already controls axial position and no flange is required. If the flange will also carry axial load, check the contact area, load direction and material limits. Not every flanged bushing is suitable for thrust loading.

Standard Sizes and Custom PTFE Flange Bushings

GLARY offers PTFE flange bushings in standard sizes for common mounting requirements, with custom manufacturing to your drawing for assemblies that need a specific flange profile or fit.

Whether you are selecting a standard size or replacing an existing part, confirm the bore diameter, outside diameter, bushing length, flange diameter and flange thickness against your application requirements. For non-standard requirements, send us your drawing for review. We can check the dimensions and technical specifications before confirming the order. An existing part number, sample or dimensioned engineering drawing also helps clarify the required fit and mounting arrangement.

How to Specify a PTFE Flange Bushing

To specify a PTFE flange bushing, provide the main dimensions and operating conditions of your application.

Dimensions

  • Shaft diameter
  • Housing bore diameter
  • Bushing length
  • Flange outside diameter
  • Flange thickness

Operating conditions

  • Radial load and any axial load on the flange
  • Sliding speed and type of movement
  • Operating temperature
  • Lubrication conditions
  • Shaft material and surface finish, if available

An existing part number, sample or dimensioned drawing helps us check the required geometry. If the standard dimensions do not match your assembly, send your drawing for review.

PTFE Flange Bushings FAQ

Questions that come up most often when specifying or replacing a flanged composite bushing.

Can a PTFE flange bushing replace a standard DU-type bushing?
It may be suitable if the material specification, shaft and housing dimensions, fit and operating conditions are compatible. These PTFE flange bushings are the flanged form of our PTFE composite bearings, also called a PTFE flanged bearing. The flange also needs sufficient clearance and a suitable seating surface. Check the complete assembly before approving the replacement.
Can the flange carry axial load?
That depends on the flange design and how it contacts the surrounding component. Confirm the axial load, contact area, sliding conditions and allowable material limits before using the flange as a thrust surface.
Are PTFE flange bushings available in standard sizes?
Yes. GLARY offers standard sizes as well as custom manufacturing options. Check the available dimensions against your application requirements before placing an order.
Can PTFE flange bushings be made to a custom drawing?
Yes. Custom production can be considered based on your drawing, required dimensions, tolerances, material specification and order quantity. Send your drawing for a feasibility review.
What should I check when replacing an existing flanged bushing?
Besides the bore and outside diameter, check the flange diameter, flange thickness, installed axial position and clearance from adjacent components. Also verify the shaft condition and operating requirements before finalizing the replacement.
